Honey Bees are fantastic insects that have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years. Honey bees are very important insects, they are extremely high pollinators which help contribute to the survival of our planet.
Honey bees can usually be seen during springtime to late autumn. Throughout winter months they'll be hibernation (in their nest or hive). Domestic nests are commonly located in a dry and moderately warm location such as, a chimney breast or within a roof or wall cavity of buildings. A queen honey bee will try and locate her nest in a warmer place as possible, in a cheeky way, they have be known to use the warmth from a properties central heating to their own advantage throughout the colder months. Once springtime arrives the hive or nest wakes up and gets to work. The queens new eggs will hatch and the new worker and drones bees will get to work. Queen Bees will continuously lay daily eggs (over 2000 per day). Worker Bees will collect food and feed the eggs and young. Drone Bees will mate and reproduce with the queen. Unfortunately, the worker bees only live for around 6 weeks, this one of the reasons why the queen needs to consistently reproduce, to help keep the colony stay in high numbers and at full strength. As far as the drones are concerned they are surplus to requirements once autumn arrives. The queen will produce new drones ones the following spring. The average life of a queen bee is approximately 5 years. Important Information Honey bees are not a pest and should not be treated as one. We always recommend contacting your local beekeeper if you have a swarm of honey bees. A beekeeper may want to come to your property and remove the swarm safely.
